Mar Picao is a five-piece group led by composer Julio Valdes. Known for their mix of Afro-Cuban grooves with the ambient of progressive rock, the band creates a sound that defies convention. Drawing inspiration from the ocean’s power —an idea captured in the band’s name— the quintet offers a sound that is as intricate as it is primal and as cerebral as it is danceable. Their high-energy shows are driven by a dynamic interplay between guitar, bass, drums, and keys, blending polyrhythmic intensity with improvisational flair and a spirited onstage chemistry. Since forming in 2015, the band has cultivated a reputation for genre-defying music. Their debut album, Cinema (2017), set the tone for their signature balance of soundscapes and syncopation. Their upcoming album, Antecedente (2025), pushes Valdes’ vision even further, unlocking new dimensions into the band’s musical identity. With a fiercely original voice, Mar Picao continues to shape a sound that is unmistakably their own: rooted in Afro-Cuban folklore but driven by the atmospheric elements of progressive rock and the conversational spirit of jazz.
